Favourite African Fashion Designers: Kenya Edition

Posted by Mary Bosibori on

It’s a great time for African fashion. Not only is the world taking notice of the beautiful fabrics and vibrant colour palettes that have been inspiring us for decades but, a new generation of African designers are reminding us that creativity is no way in short supply on our amazing continent! They’re producing innovative, high quality designs that can be worn in London or Lagos, Nairobi or New York.

Each month on the blog, we will be travelling to a different African country to showcase the work of some of our favourite designers. If you know of any designers we must check out – please drop us a comment below.

The voyage begins in the home of the Adèle Dejak brand – Kenya.

Kooroo was established in 2006 in Kenya and by Hebret Lakew and Enid Lanez. A women’s ready-to-wear clothing line, the brand blends sophisticated urban chic with African influences therefore embodying a combination of traditional heritage and global appeal. Kooroo believes in local production, training, sustainable and ethical local employment and all design and production takes place in Kooroo workshops based in Nairobi.

Kooroo currently have two shops in Kenya. One is located on General Mathenge Drive, Le Rustique premises, Westlands, Nairobi and the second is located at City Mall, Nyali, Mombasa. Kooroo garments are also stocked in online store Sapelle.com.

Interesting fact: “Kooroo” means “be proud” in Amharic according to this Kooroo interview on the African Prints in Fashion blog.
