Tips & Tricks for the Best Jewellery Care
Share
Jewellery care should not come at a high price. As a jewellery lover, your pieces are one of your most elegant and cherished possessions.
As such, having a good understanding of jewellery care can help you keep them in great condition for as long as possible.
Here is our go-to guide to keep your pieces as good as new for years to come.
Treat & Wear with Care
Always put your jewellery on last when dressing so clothes don’t catch on it: apply makeup and hairspray first so they don’t contaminate your jewels, making sure to let everything dry before adding the finishing touch.
As part of the jewellery care, always remember to take off your jewellery before taking part in any strenuous physical activity to avoid the risk of damage. It may also best to take off your pieces before bed depending on the size and material.
Storage
Before any jewellery is stored, make sure that it is clean and dry. Moisture can cause the metal to tarnish or degrade much quicker.
Have a quick analysis of your jewellery. After that make a few piles that separate them according to what type of metal they are made of. This will help prevent the metals from tarnishing when they interact with each other.
Necklaces are notorious for tangling. Here are a few tangle-free storage options to boost your jewellery care.
- Coat hanger display – This is a cute way to hang your jewellery on a wall or on the side of a closet. To make one, just get yourself a wooden coat hanger and screw in small hooks on the underside.
- Jewellery cabinet – If you’re lucky enough to find a jewellery organiser cabinet, then you can hang your necklaces nice and neatly and keep them free of dust and out of any sunlight.
Keep Them Lustrous
To keep your pieces nice and shiny use a gentle metal polisher for brass and gold and a soft cloth to remove tarnish and restore lustre. For beads, wipe gently with warm water and a cloth. This is critical for a lasting jewellery care.
Cleaning D.I.Y for Brass
To restore shine use a cleaner that contains acidic ingredients, such as lemon, tomato or vinegar. Avoid using abrasive items to prevent scratches. For a D.I.Y option, mix lemon juice and baking soda into a paste, rub onto surface with a cloth, then gently rinse off and buff dry to a shine. A soft cloth would be ideal for great jewellery care. Dirt reduces the lustre of brass so regularly washing your brass jewellery in warm water and soap will keep it shining. Use a polishing cloth to buff the brass and maintain its lustre.
