Ghana & SANKOFA SYMBOL > RETURN AND GET IT
SANKOFA is an Akan word, a Ghanian local trib. It derives from the words SAN (return), KO (go), and FA (look, seek and take). The literal translation of Sankofa is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind”.
Sankofa refers to the Bono Adinkra symbol that is represented as a mythical bird with its head turned back and mouth near its valuable eggs representing the future. The bird further has its legs stretched forward with due diligence, flying with a stylized heart.
The importance of life experiences
Firstly, Sankofa highlights the importance of life experiences and lessons learned in the past. What however matters next is how we use these experiences to achieve our future goals. Therefore by connecting the past with the present enables us to be more effective in understanding and shaping the forces that inform on our future. Secondly and most importantly we need to learn from the dynamics of life we lead, which must remain as eye-openers for future judgment and reasoning. Moreover, the Akan firmly believe we need to remember our past to secure our future survival, due diligence, and growth.
